What is Ojas?
Ojas is the synonym for immunity in Ayurveda and is often poetically described as the honey / nectar / invisible essence of the body. It is a sweet ‘honey like’ essence that flows through our bodily tissues and is responsible for the strength and vitality of our digestive, nervous and endocrine systems. It is formed by the proper nourishment of all of our bodily tissues & cells as it is the final product of digestion— digestion of food & experience. We are believed, in a metaphoric way, to be born with 8 golden drops (or bindus) of Ojas, these drops can be depleted over time and the depletion of our Ojas is believed to be what causes ageing, weakening, lack of vibrancy, lustre, sensuality and love within the body & life. The classical Ayurvedic texts say that it takes roughly 27-35 days to replenish Ojas by nourishing the body and mind properly. Living in alignment with nature and anchoring ourselves into a nourishing daily practice helps us to protect our sacred reserves of Ojas so that we may maintain a radiant vessel, steady spirit and feeling that all is well in our heart.
