Dear friends,

I have been teaching pregnant women yoga for nearly twenty years and about eight years ago when I was pregnant with my second child I undertook training to become a doula – a birth support person. At the time, I was working on my book ‘The Yoga of Birth’ and I wanted to dive deeper into my understanding of pregnancy, birthing and this area of deep and powerful women’s work.  I have since birthed two more babies myself (I am a mother of four boys!) and had the honour and joy of supporting many women through pregnancy and in birthing their babies as both a yoga teacher and a doula.

I have been fortunate to experience very straight-forward and positive birthing experiences with my boys but I am well aware that this is not every woman’s experience of birthing and that the overly medicalised system of birthing support often stacks the odds against an empowering pregnancy, a natural birth or a positive birthing experience. My goal is to help women experience pregnancy mindfully from a place of power and gratitude not fear. I hope to share this intention with the teachers I train in the ‘Yoga of Birth’ course. Whether you are a yoga teacher, a doula or simply a pregnant woman, this course will serve you deeply. 

I’ve long loved the idea of ‘sadhana’ which means ‘conscious spiritual practice’, bringing beauty and awareness to the everyday and to all that we do. What I have learnt in teaching pregnant women yoga is a great deal about creating sadhana –sacred space – as means to support women in the joy and beauty as well as the grit and tears of childbirth. I have learnt that even when machines are beeping and heart rate monitors are peaking or falling with scary alarm, coming back to the breath and back into the body can save women and babies from trauma and enable them to step up to challenges they thought would overwhelm them completely. I learnt that the beauty of birthing is deeply and intrinsically linked to the fragile sentience of our time on this planet.

In supporting women as a prenatal yoga teacher, it has been my honour and my privilege to see some human beings take their first breath in this lifetime – tiny lungs drawing prana in for the very first time. What a potent reminder of the beauty of life!

I would love for you to join me in this very special training as we embark on this wonder-filled experience of supporting women through this magical time in their lives and preparing them both physically and emotionally for the journey of birthing and motherhood.  I can’t think of a more beautiful and conducive place for us to come together to study and practice these ancient teachings than the Krishna Village – heaven on earth itself!
