Human birth is a great gift — welcome and honour it with due respect, humility and joy
There is nothing as powerful as a group of women coming together to support one another. The primal journey of birthing our babies is a pivotal moment in a woman's life, so spending this time together should not be underestimated in its power for us to ‘hold space’ in our minds and hearts for birthing.
Teaching a pregnancy yoga class provides just this precious opportunity and is a great addition to your skill set as a yoga teacher or doula, as well as a great relaxation if you are an expecting mother.
Meet your teachers
Katie Manitsas (lead teacher) is the author of 'The Yoga of Birth' who wears many hats including those of yoga teacher, activist, doula and vegetarian cook.
Katie was the first certified Advanced Jivamukti Yoga teacher in Australia and has studied extensively with the Wise Earth School of Ayurveda under the guidance of Mother Maya, as well as being a qualified Kundalini Yoga teacher. She completed training as a doula (birthing companion) in 2009.
Katie was the founder of Jivamukti Yoga Sydney (formerly Samadhi Yoga). She regularly trains yoga teachers and specialises in running pre-natal teacher training. She lives in Sydney's Inner West with her husband, extended family and her four sons.

Lila Kirtana (guest teacher) heads up our yoga teacher training department at the Krishna Village. She completed an Education degree at the University of Technology Sydney in 1998, and has been teaching yoga since 2005.
After spending 2.5 years deeply immersed in the yogic lifestyle as a volunteer in a yoga ashram, from 2008 onwards she has been working full time as a yoga teacher trainer in Byron Bay [Certificate IV in Yoga Teaching, RYT-500, Cert IV in Training and Assessment, training in Yin Yoga]. She completed Pre/Postnatal Yoga training with Bliss Baby Yoga in 2012, and afterwards was a regular presenter on their courses. After becoming a mother, Lila completed a Kid's Yoga teacher training with Zenergy Yoga in 2014 and occasionally teaches Mum's and Bubs, Mum's and Toddlers and Kid's yoga classes in the Byron Shire.
Lila also holds a Diploma of Remedial Massage, is the lead singer of the enCHANTed band which holds regular kirtan evenings in the Byron Shire and at Yoga Festivals, and has a deep knowledge and understanding of Ayurveda through years of study and regular trips to India. Lila is a passionate Bhakti yogi inspired to share the things she loves through yoga teacher trainings.
About the course
Yoga has proven to be a safe and effective practice during pregnancy. It has a whole variety of positive effects on the mother’s body, including developing strength, maintaining fitness and reducing symptoms of pregnancy such as muscle aches, swelling, sciatica, cramps, and fatigue. But even more so, yoga has demonstrated a positive impact on mother's and baby's mind, inducing a sense of inner peace and wellbeing. Join us to learn how to safely practice yoga asana in pregnancy and how to adapt your yoga classes for pregnant women.
The training encompasses three parts:
Pregnancy (conception, asana, prananyama, sadhana, yoga nidra, chanting and meditation)
Labour preparation (yogic scriptures on birth, pranayama for labour, birth without violence or ahimsa, pratyahara in birthing)
Post-natal (care of self, care of baby, sacred 40 days after birthing, mantras and chanting, shraddha, baby massage/yoga).

Anatomy and physiology of pregnancy
Business skills for launching your pre and postnatal yoga classes

Overall, this course encompasses 85 hours of training including homework and teaching practical assignments**. As a yoga teacher, it can be applied as:
- 85 accredited hours with Yoga Alliance
- 50 accredited hours with Yoga Australia
To get this accreditation you must have completed a minimum of 200 hours of yoga teacher training. The course is open to everyone but only certified yoga teachers can get the certification.
Homework is optional and only needed if you want certification.
**Please note there is a considerable home study and teaching prac requirement for this training in addition to the scheduled class room hours if you want to get certification.
The Krishna Village can host up to 85 people in a combination of rooms, dorms and camping spots. There are usually around 30 full time volunteers who work in our organic gardens and maintain the grounds, 15-20 retreat guests or Karma Yogis and up to 40 course participants on a variety of courses that may run parallel in our different teaching venues.
All rooms have shared amenities. The amenities blocks include showers, toilets and a coin operated laundry (byo laundry powder).
Common areas include the kitchen & campfire area (the heart of the Krishna Village), the reading room (with Internet hotspot) and the yoga hall where we gather for classes.
Single, twin & double rooms in the White House
The latest addition to the Krishna Village accommodation options is the White House - a beautiful rustic Queenslander that has been fully renovated in 2018. Our newest yoga class room is on the first floor, while underneath we offer 7 retreat rooms with private verandahs. You can choose between 5 double rooms with a Queen Size bed (available as single or double occupation) and 2 Twin Shares, with two single beds each. Bedding is being provided. Shared toilet and shower facilities are on the same floor.

The Krishna Village offers 3 double rooms (1 big bed), 4 twin share rooms (bunk bed) and 11 single rooms in former shipping containers. They have been renovated and turned into simple but comfortable accommodation, each with a beautiful wooden verandah, shared by 3 or 4 adjacent rooms. Bedding is being provided.
Set among beautiful mango and lychee trees in our eastern garden, our camp ground can host up to 20 tents and 5 camper vans. The area for the vans is equipped with electricity. The amenities block is only 50m away.
Delicious Vegetarian Food
The Krishna Farm has been producing organic veggies since the 1980s and has therefore fantastic conditions to grow excellent produce. We grow as much of our own food as we can, and otherwise buy locally wherever possible.
We provide 3 delicious vegetarian meals every day, with lunches taking place at the Krishna Village community kitchen, and breakfast and dinners - mostly Indian style - served at the prasadam hall, next to the temple.
All our food is prasadam - sacred food prepared in a consciousness of loving service. Like in other cultures, we offer our food before we eat to say Grace and thank the Divine for the sun, the rain, and all the visible and invisible blessings necessary to co-create a delicious meal. The Krishna Farm
Nestled in the foothills of Mount Warning, in the heart of the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, the Krishna Farm “New Govardhana” is a 1000 acre property with orchards, certified organic veggie gardens, cows, horses, streams and swimming holes in abundance.
New Govardhana serves as an ashram to a community of yogis who aspire to live according to their deepest vows and commitments on their path of service, spiritual contentment and happiness, Bhakti Yoga. The most fulfilling aspect of teaching yoga for me is in guiding the student through the experience of the practice in such a way that they begin to establish for themselves a foundation for living in the world with greater connection and grounding. What better time in a woman’s life to offer that support than during pregnancy, when she moves towards birthing not only a baby but herself as a mother?
With this in mind, it can be intimidating for a yoga teacher to have a pregnant woman in class. I embarked on prenatal yoga with Katie in the hope that I would learn how to safely design and lead pregnant women through an asana class. The training exceeded my expectations: It was not only comprehensive but lovingly crafted, filled with the richness that Katie and the guest teachers bring to the course with their combined years of experience.
The course covered pregnancy, preparation for labour and the postnatal period. Some of my favourite parts included learning about appropriate asana for conception and pregnancy, sequencing and class planning and the beautiful focus on yoga philosophy in the context of pregnancy and childbirth. I have a special interest in Ayurveda and I loved the wisdom that Katie brought to the course on the relationship between Ayurveda and pregnancy, particularly the way that pregnancy impacts on the doshas.
There is an incredible nourishment to be drawn from working with women and creating sacred space to support one another, particularly during pregnancy and childbirth. The students in my group all had different experiences with pregnancy and childbirth. I do not yet have children and I was worried about whether I had the tools to complete the course, but I was put at ease. I have found teaching prenatal classes since the course very rewarding.
